The Brother MFC-J1205w printed a five-page text document in 2.5 seconds (or 12.2 ppm), significantly faster than the average of 33.8 seconds (or 8.9 ppm). Printing mixed text and color graphics was also faster than average.
Our six-page PDF printed in 1 minute and 53 seconds (or 3.2 pages per minute). This was faster than the average of two minutes and 12 seconds (or 2.7 ppm).
By comparison, the $85 HP DeskJet 2755e took just over 3 minutes (or 2 ppm) to print the same document.
Printing photos was very slow. The MFC-J1205w took 8 minutes and 16 seconds to produce an 8×10-inch glossy print.
This was almost double the average time of minutes and 19 seconds. However, the HP DeskJet 2755e was just as slow, taking 7 minutes and 8 seconds to print an 8 x 10-inch photo.
My brother took 3 minutes and 3 seconds to print a photo with
x 6 inches at the highest quality settings. For unlimited printing in Windows 10, you need to use the Brother iPrintandScan software.
It took nearly minutes to print borderless x6-inch glossy paper—almost twice as long as the average of 2 minutes and 9 seconds.

The MFC-J1205w made a color copy in 28.1 seconds, which is right around the average for comparable models. By comparison, the HP 2755e was slightly slower, producing a color copy in 32 seconds.
This brother is one of the fastest models to make black and white copies. The MFC-J1205w produced a monochrome copy in just 10.8 seconds on average, significantly faster than the average of 15.9 seconds.
The Brother was equally impressive when scanning. It quickly captured a high-resolution 600 dpi color JPEG scan of an 8 x 10 image in just 37.5 seconds—almost half the average time of 1 minute 6 seconds. In contrast, the HP 2755e was significantly slower, taking 1 minute and 36 seconds to complete the same scan.
Scanning, 300-dpi black-and-white files to PDF took just 9.1 seconds on the MFC-J1205w, beating the 11.7 second average and well ahead of the HP DeskJet 2755e’s 19 seconds.
The fonts were quite dark and looked sharp. The edges felt a bit sharper than the printed edges of the HP DeskJet 2755e.
Printed graphics with lots of detail and accurate colors. Compared to the graphics printed on the HP 2755e, the Brother graphics had a slightly smoother surface texture and better detail.
But in my brother’s prints some faces looked too bright and thus lost their shape. However, text in our test PDF printed out sharply (something the HP DeskJet reproduced less sharply). Also, the text in the graphic areas of the PDF seemed sharper on the brother’s prints.
