Epson ET-3850 all-in-one supertank printer-The Epson EcoTank ET-3850 is, an inkjet multifunction printer (MFP) designed for the home office. It is a three-in-one machine, providing print, scan, and replica functions, but not faxing. It’s nearly outlined, which includes a 30-sheet automatic document feeder, wireless networking, and a small, low-key color display. It may have a sealed 250-sheet paper tray inside, and therefore the printer can print on both sides of a sheet of paper without you having to lift a finger.
The ET-3850 comes with a whole range of color ink bottles, can theoretically hold 2000 pages, and 2 large black ink bottles containing fourteen thousand pages of black text can be made. Like refill ink kits, the self-supplied ink should make this MFP a more powerful value proposition than similar cartridge-based devices, provided you print at least a few thousand pages over the course of its life.
Epson is one of the few inkjet makers that also has difficulty providing setup discs, making it a simple MFP to install as long as you continue to have an optical drive. Our initial print jobs were plagued by temporary lags and sluggish performance. As if the printer was battling network communications, but those problems tended to go away once we rebooted our device and host computer.

The ET-3850 isn’t, meant for icon printing, and it’s not particularly fast, with every half dozen x four inches of printing taking just over 2 and [*fr1] minutes. On A4 paper, a ten x 8-inch 2 print takes only seven minutes, which is slightly higher. For an Associate in Nursing “office” printer, the unit of output area is quite reasonable, with true colors at lower scales, and plenty of detail across multiple colors.
However, we tend to notice that black-and-white prints, and therefore the darkest areas of color photos, don’t live up to Epson’s usual high standards. Upon further investigation, it turned out that the printer was abusing pigmented black ink, which did not match the icon paper.
We haven’t come across a rotten Epson scanner yet, and so the scanner on the ET-3850 delivers typical performance. While not the sharpest, the image area unit is, accurately exposed to a good variety of dynamics, with only the darkest colors being difficult to distinguish. It’s not the fastest scanner, taking twenty-eight seconds for an A4 sheet at three hundred dots per inch (dpi), and nearly 2 minutes to require half a dozen x 4-inch icons at 1,200 dpi at most.
Overall, it’s a capable MFP with a decent balance of options for the home, provided you don’t want fax capabilities. While expensive to obtain, the included ink and very low operating price should make it more than that over a typical lifetime. Unfortunately, Epson doesn’t protect you against the upfront price tag with the extended warranty, which guarantees that the MFP can last long enough for you to reap the benefits.

Thanks to the refill tank, the ink value per page for the ET-4850 is, only 0.3 cents for normal black pages and 0.9 cents for color. Compared to the Brother MFC-J4335DW, it protects 0.6 cents per black page and 3.6 cents per color page, or $6 per thousand text pages and $36 per thousand color pages. As always, remember that the number that matters is the total value of ownership, which means the initial value and the running price for the number of pages you want to print. You should count to check that the printer is, really cheaper in the long run.
If you don’t expect to print enough pages for the trouble of ink costs, think about the alternative winner MFC-J4335DW Editor due to its low initial value. Or if you want faster, more bulk paper handling, think about the Epson WF-7820, which has 2 paper trays, or the WF-7840, which has 3 trays. Each will handle up to supertabloid paper sizes, and therefore subsequent containers allow you to load many types of paper immediately.
The niche for the ET-4850 is probably a business office that prints a lot and needs AIO options. It is very similar to the MFC-J4335DW for options, and with adequate use it will give you a lower total value of ownership. Combin That asi deserves an alternative Editor’s award.
